Grupo Alfonso Gallardo has made a strong step in technological research and development, starting up a Research and Development Department (R+D) that currently is working on several projects.

This department identifies the needs for innovation and development in each of the Group’s areas, and also promotes collaboration with the Technological Centres and Universities, amongst other organisms and institutions.

Grupo Gallardo considers innovation as the organisation’s strategic foundation to guarantee growth and competitiveness in the company. This is why a R+D+i Management System (UNE 166002:2006) has been implemented at Siderúrgica Balboa in order to organise the available resources in the system (human, technical and economic) and direct them towards generating knowledge, new products and processes and the improvement of already existing ones, keeping in mind the production and sales processes.


Within the Research and Development’s framework various actions are begin carried out through signed agreements with the University of Extremadura (Uex), the Instituto Tecnológico de Rocas Ornamentales y Materiales de Construcción (INTROMAC) [Technological Institute of Ornamental Rocks and Construction Material], the Fundación para el Desarrollo de la Ciencia y la Tecnología en Extremadura (FUNDECYT) [Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology in Extremadura] and with the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Metalúrgicas (CENIM) [The National Metallurgy Research Centre].

One of the agreements with Uex is framed within the University’s I Plan de Iniciación a la Investigación, Desarrollo Tecnológico e Innovación [Technology Research, Development and Innovation Initialisation Plan]. Its aim is to carry out activities that mutually benefit both, with special reference to developing strategies in the following areas:

  • Technological development.
  • Materials.
  • Petrochemical.
  • Environmental.

Some of the key R+D projects developed or in progress, in collaboration with the University of Extremadura include:

  1. The PETRI project (a project to stimulate the transfer of research results) whose aim is to evaluate Grupo Alfonso Gallardo´s capacity to implement logistics systems evaluating the technical, economic and environmental system.

  2. Project for the development of technologies for electro-analytical monitoring of the emissions of heavy metals and effluent liquids, to then be treated with activated carbons from grape vine lumber.

    • Develop an electro-analytical sensor to monitor the emissions of heavy metals in the effluent.
    • Take advantage of the waste created from pruning grape vines, converting it into activated carbons capable of absorbing heavy metals from the industrial effluent.
    • Treating industrial effluent with activated carbons derived from grape vines benefits the ecosystem receiving the effluent.

  3. A pilot plant design project to obtain biodiesel and bio-ethanol from biomass, with the main aim of designing an optimised pilot plant that for the first time in the sector obtains lignocellulosics and biodiesel from sugar substrates taken from recycled biomass and vegetable waste.

  4. A research Project on the Impact of Extremadura’s Refinery Complex through the Atmosphere. See more


On the other hand, we must note the framework collaboration agreement with the Instituto Tecnológico de Rocas Ornamentales y Materiales de Construcción (INTROMAC) [Technological Institute of Ornamental Rocks and Construction Material] which focuses on the collaboration in scientific and technological fields with a common interest, along with cooperation in education and training.

There is also a specific agreement with INTROMAC [Technological Institute of Ornamental Rocks and Construction Material] to Research Technological Surveillance to Valuate ironworks slag in different units of the civil works infrastructure, and presenting proposals to help in research projects. Its aim is to contribute to the recycling and valuation of the ironworks slag generated by the company, to obtain a material with a value added, greater technical performance applicable to civil works infrastructures. They also have an agreement with INTROMAC and Occidental Empresa Constructora on the Valuation of the ironworks slag from electric furnaces as construction aggregate, in the production of Bituminous Mixes with the final aim of researching the suitability of the ironworks slag as aggregate in producing conventional bituminous mixes to design and develop work formulas on the type of conventional mix, understood as S-12, M-10 or F-10, us as road coatings; slag is used as a substitute to conventional aggregates in different percentages.

Grupo Gallardo has also signed a collaboration agreement with FUNDECYT with the aim of collaborating in research activities, technological development and innovation.

The collaboration agreement between CENIM (Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Metalúrgicas) [National Metallurgy Research Centre] and Grupo Alfonso Gallardo aims to collaborate in scientific and technological activities they have in common:

  • Carrying out research projects and programmes, technological or innovation development.
  • In as many activities of common interest to each party’s activities.
