Refineria Balboa will be a total conversion refinery, using the latest generation of equipment and processes, with far superior efficiency levels than those currently seen in other refineries. Balboa will only burn gas fuels and will not generate residual production, which will result in a significant reduction in emissions and waste.
With this initiative, the Alfonso Gallardo Group, along with other national partners (BBVA, Iberdrola, Caja Madrid, Caja Extremadura and the Industrial Development Society of Extremadura), will lead the way in the construction of one of the landmarks of our modern economic history.
Refineria Balboa will have the capacity to produce more than five million tonnes of petroleum products, half of them gas oils, and in this way will help the State to bring down the national current account deficit, by reducing foreign imports.
It is by far the largest industrial project in Extremadura’s history, and at the present, one of the largest in Europe.
Refineria Balboa will need a pipeline for the supply of crude oil from the Port of Huelva. It will be about 200 kilometres long and will pass through land that has already been affected environmentally. The pipeline’s trench will be covered over and environmental restoration of the whole area carried out along ecological and scenic guidelines, leaving only some markers to indicate the place where the pipeline will pass.
Video construction of the Repsol Cartagena-Puertollana oil pipeline (350km).
The whole of Europe has been connected for about 40 years by oil pipelines and multiproduct pipelines.
The 55% of the European refineries are located in the inland part of the countries, rather than in the seaside part of the countries. This is the case of Refineria Balboa.
