Why a refinery?

Petroleum is like the blood that moves the current global economy. Without petroleum there wouldn’t be gasolines, or plastics, or many of the chemical products that we use every day, such as drugs. Although there are constant investigations being made into "alternative" forms of energy, it is true to say that at the present they represent no more than a mere "supplement", that did not reach even 7 percent of the total energy consumption of a country like Spain in 2004.

Forecast for the global consumption of primary energy

• In OECD countries demand will increase 0.6% annually, at the same rate as population growth.
• Consumption of gasoline / diesel in Europe:
• 1997: 260 Mt/year
• 2015: 340 Mt/year
