In addition to equipping the installation with the very latest technologies in order to guarantee safety both inside and out, Refineria Balboa will take very special care to train its staff in security measures and instil a safety ethic in the workplace that will influence the behaviour and activity of personnel.

As a matter of fact, in design and operation, Refineria Balboa has purposefully incorporated the most modern security and prevention measures:

• Study of operating hazards (HAZOP*), carried out in collaboration with specialised entities.
• Integrated control system, including management, process control and advanced control, using the most suitable, state-of-the-art technologies.
• Security systems and alarm management, along with modern predictive maintenance systems in order to minimise incidents and allow action to be taken quickly and safely in the case of process anomalies.
• Compliance with the strictest safety regulations, with a correct use of redundancy criteria.
• Personnel’s full knowledge and adherence to all regulations.
• Installation of fire detection and extinction systems in buildings as well as process areas.
• Installation of detection system for toxic gases and explosives.
• Installation in strategic points of personal protection systems (showers, eyebaths, escape routes, visual and aural indicators, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, etc.).
• Continuous training of operators and contractors through health and safety courses, including emergency simulations.
• Creation and distribution (internal and external) of emergency plans, in addition to coordination with authorities and local services.
• Correct labelling of pipes, tanks, and similar installations that contain or may contain products which are a health hazard.
• Security measures and surveillance (closed circuit television and anti-vandalism installations).

Of all existing refineries in Spain, it will be the furthest away from population nucleuses.
